Coin Resource Center Includes Entries on Gobrecht Dollars

Stack’s Bowers Galleries Coin Resource Center includes entries on Gobrecht dollars, pattern silver dollars struck in the late 1830s at the Philadelphia Mint. Designs reminiscent of the seated Britannia motif that had appeared on British coinage for centuries were prepared by British-born artist Thomas Sully. Dies were prepared by Christian Gobrecht. The Seated Liberty motif from these patterns would appear on silver denominations half dime through dollar beginning in 1837.

Gobrecht dollars are organized into two distinct subtypes, No Stars on Obverse, Stars on Reverse (Type I) and Stars on Obverse, No Stars on Reverse (Type II). At time of writing, the CRC includes entries on three varieties, two Type Is and one Type II.

The CRC entries on Gobrecht dollars will be familiar to anyone who has navigated other CRC entries. Discussion of the overall type, both subtypes, and each listed variety are accompanied by high-quality images and, in the case of individual varieties, links to recent auction appearances and Coins in Motion animations. Links at the bottom of the pages for the overall type, subtype, and individual varieties allow users to reach out to our staff in the event they have an example about which they would like information or if they have appropriate edits for any of the content.
